Walmart Switches Up Packaging in an Effort to Reduce Waste

Walmart Switches Up Packaging in an Effort to Reduce Waste

On Thursday, Walmart made the announcement that the company would be making changes to eliminate waste.

Walmart wants to offer products that are better for the environment at a reasonable price. The solution? New packaging. The company will be switching out its plastic mailers for paper ones that can be recycled curbside.

Additionally, by the end of the year all customers will be able to choose to skip plastic bags when picking up curbside orders. Made-to-fit technology will also be added to about half of fulfillment centers to decrease the amount of shipping materials used and increase the amount of boxes that can fit onto each truckload.

Jane Ewig, Walmart’s senior vice president of sustainability said, “It’s about making sustainability the everyday choice for our customers. And it’s about making sure the path of least resistance is the most sustainable one.”

This change made by Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, is expected to eliminate more than 2,000 tons of plastic from circulation in the nation by the beginning of next year, according to CNBC.
