Hospitals Use AI to Fight Doctor Burnout

Hospitals are finding ways to use artificial intelligence tools to cut down on administrative tasks while fighting doctor burnout.

Family physician at Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Tra’chella Johnson Foy, takes a different approach to patient visits. Instead of coming in and sitting behind a computer screen, Foy simply takes out her phone and asks for permission to record the visit. This allows her to focus solely on the patient and let AI do the rest.

CNBC revealed that Foy, along with others at Baptist Health Hospital, have been using the DAX app powered by artificial intelligence, from Microsoft’s Nuance division. “The program transcribes doctors’ and patients’ comments, then creates a clinical physician summary formatted for an electronic health record.”

This method keeps doctors from having to type up notes during the patient visits and saves them time after the visit as well.

Baptist Health’s chief digital and information officer, Aaron Miri, explained that by using AI tools, doctors can eliminate the administrative redundancy and perform at their peak.

Researchers estimate that adopting AI tools to simplify administrative tasks like documenting visits, requesting insurance pre-authorization for procedures and processing bills could also help hospitals cut their total costs by 5% to 11% in the next five years, per CNBC.
