Chipotle is Going Green

Chipotle is Going Green

On Tuesday, Chipotle Mexican Grill unveiled a sustainable restaurant design as the company works towards cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The new design features an all-electric restaurant powered completely by renewable energy. According to CNN, “Noticeable changes in this new store format include rooftop solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations and biodegradable flatware and bowls.” Cactus-leather chairs and artwork made from recycled rice husks are part of the new layout. The company said the design is subject to change based on feedback from employees and customers.

Locations with these features have already opened in Gloucester, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. CNBC reported that by next year, more than 100 of Chipotle’s new locations will use all-electric equipment and some of the new features.

Chipotle’s chief corporate affairs officer, Laurie Schalow, explained in a statement, “With our aggressive development goal in North America, we hold ourselves accountable to reduce the environmental impact of our restaurants.”

Chipotle is not the only restaurant that has made efforts to become more sustainable. Sweet Green, McDonalds and Burger King have also made changes to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions in recent years.
