Amazon Announces Plans to Close Online Bookseller This Month

Amazon Announces Plans to Close Online Bookseller This Month

Amazon announced that its global online bookseller, The Book Depository, will be closing later this month on April 26.

The Book Depository has sold books to customers worldwide for almost two decades. Amazon told a spokesperson at BBC, “I can confirm that we’ve taken the difficult decision to close Book Depository.”

The Book Depository also addressed the situation in a note on its website. “We are sorry to let you know that Book Depository will be closing on 26 April 2023 … From all of us at Book Depository we want to say “thank you”. Delivering your favourite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure.”

The Book Depository was beloved by many around the world as the company, acquired by Amazon in 2011, sells over 20 million books and ships them for free.

The decision to close the online bookseller comes at a challenging time for Amazon. The company recently cut 27,000 jobs, Fox Business reported and, the CEO Andy Jassy said it is part of a decision to be “more streamlined” in costs and headcounts due to the uncertainty of the economy.
