A Sriracha Shortage Caused Prices to Skyrocket

A Sriracha Shortage Caused Prices to Skyrocket

How much is too much for a bottle of hot sauce?

A shortage of the chili peppers used to make Sriracha hot sauce has made the condiment hard to find in stores while the black market prices are skyrocketing.

According to CNN, Huy Fong Foods, Srircha’s maker, has been dealing with a shortage of chili peppers for years now. This has resulted in some shortages and has had a negative impact on production.

Some sellers on the black market are taking advantage of the shortages by listing the condiment for ridiculously high prices. On eBay, prices for Sriracha fall anywhere from $39.98 for a 17-ounce bottle to almost $70 for a 28-ounce bottle. Also, one listing on Amazon was going for $124 for a 2-pack, per CNN.

Huy Fong reportedly said the company does not know when chili pepper supplies will increase. The shortage has also affected other products produced by the company.
