It looks like UPS delivery trucks will be getting air conditioning just in time for summer.
UPS reached an agreement with the Teamsters union on the long standing issue of air condition-less vehicles. According to CNN, UPS told the union it would begin to install air conditioning to its entire collection of 95,000 delivery trucks.
After the contract is ratified, the current fleet of delivery trucks will receive two fans per vehicle as well as air conditioning installed in the cargo area.
According to the union, temperatures have exceeded 120 degrees in the cargo areas of the vehicles in the summer. UPS has received several citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for heat-related injuries of its employees.
UPS is taking other steps to make sure its employees are staying safe while enduring the heat. The company is working with scientists involved in heat safety to create gear designed for battling heat.
“We care deeply about our people, and their safety remains our top priority,” UPS said in a statement after the agreement with the Teamsters union was announced.
