Twitter vs. Meta: What is Happening With Meta’s New App

Meta launched the new app, Threads, last week which gained 30 million users in less than 24 hours. The app interface reportedly looks a lot like Twitter and was created to provide a place where people can have real-time public conversations.

Threads requires users to have an Instagram account in order to sign up, but is more comparable to Twitter with its buttons to like, repost, reply or quote a thread. The number of likes and replies is also displayed on each post, much like a tweet.

Shortly after Threads made its debut, Twitter threatened Meta with a lawsuit accusing the company of “trade secret theft through the hiring of former Twitter employees,” according to CNN.

An attorney representing Twitter sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, claiming that former Twitter employees improperly retained documents and electronic devices. The letter then states that Twitter intends to enforce its intellectual property rights.

Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, has dismissed the claims and stated that no one on the Threads engineering team has been previously employed by Twitter.
