Many Americans had travel plans for the weekend of Juneteenth, but unfortunately storms across the nation have caused flights to be delayed and even canceled.
The flight tracking site Flight Aware recorded more than 9,000 flight delays and 579 flight cancellations nationwide on Friday. The three major New York airports reportedly had the most cancellations.
Flight issues eased a little bit on Saturday with 7,408 flight delays and more than 350 cancellations recorded. Additionally, over 1,600 flights were delayed Sunday morning.
These delays came at a bad time as there were an increased number of people traveling due to Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend. According to the Transportation Security Administration, the number of passengers screened over the weekend exceeded the passenger volume from 2019, before the pandemic.
Storms also tore through the South killing one person and injuring nearly two dozen others, according to Mississippi state officials and NBC News. Additionally, according to PowerOutage.us 388,050 residents throughout the South remained without power.
