New Law Requires California to Post Salary on All Job Listings
Applying for jobs is stressful. You think you found the perfect job listing but there is one problem…the salary range is not stated. In California, companies are about to get a little more transparent about salaries, making this process easier and fairer for applicants.
The Los Angeles Times reported that California Governor, Gavin Newsom, signed a bill last week that requires companies with 15 or more employees to list salary ranges for all job postings in the state of California.
This law does something that the California Equal Pay Act/Fair Pay Act does not. It is yet another step taken to ensure transparency and fairness regarding employees’ salaries.
The bill’s author and Senator, Monique Limòn (D-Goleta), explained the importance of equal pay and the passing of the law in a statement last Tuesday. “This is a big moment for California workers, especially women and people of color who have long been impacted by systemic inequities that have left them earning far less than their colleagues. As we continue to build a sustainable economy, we must ensure every worker is paid equitably.”
The bill is set to take effect in May of 2023. California will join other states such as Washington, Colorado and Connecticut that have already passed laws requiring companies to be transparent about salary ranges.
