For two decades, Bud Light has reigned as America’s stop selling beer, but not anymore.
According to Modelo’s Executive Vice President, Jim Sabia, the controversy surrounding Bud Light might have accelerated the process, but he said the company had been planning to become No. 1 for a while. “The fact that we became the No. 1 beer in America due to a competitor’s moves is not accurate. We’ve planned on becoming the No. 1 beer in America over the next couple of years; it just happened quicker than we anticipated.”
Modelo actually took the No. 1 spot back in May, and has managed to keep the title ever since. And, according to Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, Bud Light is not expected to make a comeback, per CNN. “Now that Modelo has overtaken Bud Light, the growth for Modelo likely will remain stronger. There’s really no scenario at this point where you would see Bud Light regain its No. 1 position.”
