Lawsuit Claims Olaplex Caused Hair Loss and Bald Spots for Some Consumers
A new lawsuit filed last week claims Olaplex, a highly favored hair product brand, causes “serious injury.” According to CNN, Olaplex says independent test results prove that the allegations being made are false.
More than two dozen women filed the lawsuit in California on Feb. 9 claiming Olaplex, specifically No. 0 to No. 9 products, caused hair loss, brittle hair, breakage, bald spots and scalp irritation. Good Morning America reported the plaintiffs are seeking more than $75,000 in damages.
The consumers point out in the lawsuit that Olaplex uses ingredients in its products that are banned in Europe and can cause allergic reactions. Plaintiffs especially complained of split and broken hair after using the products and one even said her curls turned frizzy and “straight-ish,” CNN reported.
However, a spokesperson for Olaplex defended the company against what they called “baseless accusations.” “We have publicly released test results from independent third-party laboratories, going above and beyond industry standards, to demonstrate this. We have full confidence and believe in the safety and efficacy of our products,” they said. “There are a wide variety of reasons for hair breakage or hair loss, as medical and scientific experts have publicly stated, including lifestyle, various medical conditions and medications, the aftereffects of Covid, skin conditions and more.”
