Hand Sanitizer Recall: FDA Discovers Presence of Methanol

Hand Sanitizer Recall: FDA Discovers Presence of Methanol

Jarman’s Midwest Cleaning Systems Inc. is voluntarily recalling several of its hand sanitizers due to the discovery of methanol by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recalled products include Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution and Isopropyl Alcohol Antiseptic 75% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution, according to a release by the FDA. The products come in a 1-gallon clear or plastic bottle and were available for purchase singularly or in a case of four.

The FDA encourages customers with any recalled products to dispose of them or contact the company. For a full list of recalled products and contact information, see the FDA’s release.

Methanol poisoning can be extremely dangerous and has many potential symptoms including nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma or seizures. People exposed to methanol can also become blind or have permanent damage to their central nervous system or even die, the release noted.

No adverse events related to the recalled hand sanitizers have been reported yet.
