Google Unveils First Foldable Smartphone
Last week, Google revealed teasers for its first ever foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, on YouTube and Twitter. The phone features a vertical hinge that allows the device to unfold into a tablet-like 7.6-inch display.
According to Engadget, the official price of the phone has not been announced but there are rumors that the device could go for $1,700, “a premium that is far beyond Google’s flagship Pixels.”
Google will be holding its annual developer conference at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, the event in which the new foldable smartphone was expected to be revealed, but was leaked early, Engadget reported. There, the company is also rumored to be releasing a Pixel 7a budget phone, its latest Android operating system and advancements to its AI technology, per reports from CNN.
Although there has been recent interest in foldable phones, reports show the market for them is still pretty small. According to ABI Research, foldable displays only made up for 0.7% of the smartphone market in 2021.
It is unclear when the Pixel Fold will be officially released, but Google encourages users to sign up for updates about the device, news, tips and more on its website.
