Chobani CEO Promises $2 Million to Earthquake Victims, Urges Others to Donate

Hamdi Ulukaya, CEO of the popular yogurt company, Chobani, has promised to donate a total of $1 million to support relief efforts in Turkey and Syria after catastrophic twin earthquakes devastated the countries last week. As of Friday, the death toll had exceeded 40,000.

Ulukaya, a Turkish immigrant, initially stepped up with a $1 million donation. And according to Yahoo Finance, “Ulukaya requested others join him in donating towards ongoing rescue and recovery operations, and wrote in a tweet that he would also match donations made up to $1 million through the Turkish Philanthropy Funds.”

According to the Turkish Philanthropy Fund’s website, donations will go to groups “directly involved in all the affected cities to help victims recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake and rebuilding efforts.”

According to Fox Business, Ulukaya was not only born in Turkey, “but he lived through the Erzincan earthquake that struck the area in 1992.”

This also is not the first time the chief executive has helped social causes. In January, Ulukaya proposed companies hire migrants amid mass layoffs as they would be the “most loyal and motivated workforce,” Yahoo Finance reported. Additionally, he set up a non-profit that encouraged big corporations to employ refugees.
