Disney stock fell on Monday following the much-anticipated release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” which had a “softer than expected” opening box office weekend, according to CNBC.
“Disney shares were trading down more than 4% at around $86 each, hitting a 52-week low for the company that has seen its stock fall more than 40% in the last year,” per CNBC’s report.
The film brought in $134 million at the domestic box office over the course of its first weekend in theaters. This fell short and was “softer than expected” of analyst expectations of $175 million according to CNBC.
However, due to the enormity of the first Avatar film which only brought in $77 million but went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, CNBC reports that box office analysts are not worried.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is now available in theaters everywhere.
