On Tuesday, the song management company, Hipgnosis, announced that it had acquired the rights to Justin Bieber’s entire music catalog in a $200 million deal.
The company will now receive a payment every time a song it owns is streamed, used on the radio or used in a film or TV. Hipgnosis has also acquired Bieber’s share in the original master recordings of each of his songs.
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but CNN reported that the acquisition “ranks among the biggest deals ever made for an artist under 70.”
The trend of artists cashing in on their music catalogs is growing, however, most artists are much older than Bieber when they decide to sell. BBC reminisced on the last two years when Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen both sold back their catalog rights to Sony for $300 million and $500 million.
Growth in the streaming market and short-form video apps have “heated up” the market according to The Wall Street Journal, and investors and music management companies have been purchasing music catalogs from artists for way over the average annual royalty.
Justin Bieber might have cashed in at just the right time.
