Two Women Sue Apple Alleging They Were Stalked Using AirTags

Apple introduced the AirTag tracking device in 2021 as a way for users to keep track of their belongings. Bluetooth connections are able to locate AirTags using the Find My app on Apple devices.

However, Apple addressed “unwanted tracking” in a statement back in February, noting “incidents of AirTag misuse are rare; however, each instance is one too many.”

Now, two women have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple alleging that their stalkers used the company’s AirTags to track their locations.

According to CNN, “One of the women said her ex-boyfriend allegedly placed an AirTag – a small tracking device, slightly larger than a quarter and intended to help locate lost items – into the wheel well of a tire on her car. The device was allegedly colored with a sharpie marker and tied up in a plastic baggie to disguise it.”

The other woman claimed her ex-husband planted an AirTag in her child’s backpack. According to the complaint, her ex-husband had previously been harassing her and “challenging her about her whereabouts.” When she found the AirTag, she attempted to disable it, but another one showed up in its place.

In Apple’s previous statement about unwanted tracking, the company claimed they were working with law enforcement to investigate all AirTag-related incidents they received. “We’ve identified additional improvements we can make in the information we share and the educational resources we provide, and we will be taking action, including making updates to our law enforcement documentation.”
